Historic structure, contemporary design

Working closely with the owners we completed a renovation of a 1900’s historic home located on Munjoy Hill in Portland. The owners brought a detailed plan and vision and we supplied the rest, making recommendations to the owners along the way. The result is a beautiful blend of modern and historic living.

Construction

The intent of this project was to maintain the historic character of the exterior of the building, preserve original details on the interior, and blend them with contemporary technology and design. The entire first floor and portions of the second floor were gutted. On the exterior, we restored the front porch using the existing frame and footings and installed a modern PVC and cable rail system. We reinforced the structure in the basement, added insulation to the walls and ceilings, and repaired areas showing signs of damage and age. The house now has new electrical and plumbing systems with heat pumps and heating mats in the bathrooms. We installed modern tile floors in the bathrooms, kitchen, and downstairs hallway and refinished the second floor’s original pine floors. After removing carpeting and sanding the stair treads, the stairs were painted to match the gray and white color palette and finished with polyurethane. We put in all new matching modern interior and exterior doors and finished them with clean, flat trim to blend in with the overall feel of the home.
